History of Root Funeral Home
In 1938, Joseph and Margaret Root opened the doors of the Root
Funeral Home in the original homestead of the Root Family. Margaret and
Joe, along with the funeral home, also ran an ambulance service which
was customary for the funeral homes at that time.
In 1960, their eldest son, William joined Margaret and Joe in
the family business after graduating from Worsham Mortuary School in
Chicago. In 1962, recognizing the needs of more and more people
Margaret, Joe and Bill build an addition on to the original home of a
ground level viewing room and restrooms. This was the first ground
level viewing area constructed in for a funeral home in Michigan City.
In 1970, Joe while waiting for a family to come in for viewing
had a heart attack and died at his beloved funeral home. The funeral
home soon went out of the ambulance business in 1971.
Margaret, in 1979, after playing a very important part in the
history of the funeral home, retired. In 1983, Bill's eldest son, Tom
joined the funeral home after graduating from Vincennes University and
his youngest son Brian joined him in 1988 after graduating from
Vincennes University both of the them with Funeral Service Degrees.
In 2003 the funeral home under the direction of Bill, Brian
and Tom went on to do a major remodeling and building project. A new
ground level viewing area was added along with new handicapped
restrooms with baby changing tables placed in them. A new lounge area
with dining tables was remodeled along with adding a kids room with
movies, toys and coloring books was added. An emphasis on family was
definitely placed on the new remodel making it more friendly for all
family members. A new parking area was also added next to the funeral
home
