Kenneth Mittermann
March 25, 1937 - April 3, 2017

Kenneth John Mittermann of Michigan City, IN passed away at home on April 3, 2017, after battling complications from lung cancer and COPD. Ken was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, loved by many. He was a man of kind-heartedness and optimism with a friendly nature who loved being with his family. He had a passion for all things sports-related with special interest in the White Sox and college basketball. He will be greatly missed and remembered most by his family for his warm friendly smile and caring heart, but especially for his constant positive and upbeat outlook. He was a source of assurance, hope, steadiness, and certainty for his family.

Ken was born on March 25, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois to LaVerne and John Mittermann. He graduated from Oskaloosa High School, Iowa in 1955. Ken served in the Navy during the Korean War. He briefly worked on the railroad in Iowa before moving to Indiana where he opened and managed One Hour Martinizing in Michigan City. Ken later owned and operated Michaels Dry Cleaning in LaPorte, IN. Ken continued his career in the dry cleaning and laundromat business before retiring. He was devoted to the Trail Creek community where he and his family lived for over twenty years. He spent many years serving on the Trail Creek Park Board and was active in coaching various youth sports teams and organizing youth activities.

He married Jodine (Judy) Mittermann on August 19, 1961 in Oskaloosa, Iowa, who passed away on November 24, 2016. Surviving are his children: Sue (Tim) Beres of LaPorte, IN; Sharon (Jim) Imes of South Bend, IN; and Mike Mittermann of Chicago, IL. Grandchildren include Melanie Beres living in Madrid, Spain; Sydney and Christian Imes living in South Bend, IN; and Allie (Rohan) Johnson living in Deerfield, IL. His brother John Ross Mittermann and his family survive in Wentzville, MO.

He is preceded in death by his wife of fifty-five years, Jodine "Judy" Mittermann; his parents, Laverne and John Mittermann; and infant daughter Julie Mittermann.

Arrangements are being made by Root Funeral Home in Michigan City, IN. Visitation will be on Saturday April 15, from 11-1 with a brief service at 1:00 at the Root Funeral Home.

The family wishes to thank Dr. B.Agarwal and his office staff; and Dr. Eduardo Braun and his office staff from whom he received outstanding, nurturing care.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the family to be put toward the dedication of a patient room in his and his wifes memory at the newly constructed Franciscan Community Hospital, Michigan City, IN, to be opened in 2018.
