Norbert J. Schaaf April 13, 1925 - November 9, 2010
Norbert J. Schaaf, 85, of Michigan City passed away on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 9:20 p.m. at Life Care Center in Michigan City.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Queen of All Saints Church with Rev. Kevin Huber officiating. Burial will follow in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens. A viewing will be held on Saturday from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. at Queen of All Saints Church.
Root Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Norbert was born April 13, 1925 in Jasper, Indiana to the late Otto and Helen (Berger) Schaaf.
On June 12, 1947 in Jasper, Indiana he married Mary Elise Dudine who is surviving in Michigan City.
Also surviving are eight children: Dan (Bonnie) Schaaf of Michigan City; Jeanne (Rick) Strickland of Madison, WI; Thomas (Magda) Schaaf of Albuquerque, New Mexico; John (Kay) Schaaf of Michigan City; Margaret (Charles) Kallassy of Dallas, TX; James (Robin) Schaaf of Davis, CA; Anne Elise (Sirus) Kermani of Delmar, New York; and Mary Helen (David) Hoppe of Indianapolis, IN; twenty-one grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren also surviving.
Preceding him in death is one brother Edward Schaaf.
Norbert was an architect in the Michigan City area where his specialty was designing churches. He designed Queen of All Saints Church and St. Luke's Church in Michigan City and in La Porte Sacred Heart Church and Church of the Bretheren.
He was one of the first members of the Historical Review Board in Michigan City. He was a graduate of the University if Notre Dame, a member of Queen of All Saints Church and St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church where he was in the choir. He was also a member of the Michigan City Lions Club, Knights of Columbus ,Michigan City Community Chorus and the Preservationists and was a volunteer at the Old Lighthouse Museum. He loved to go sailing, paint and loved playing and listening to music. He was a veteran of the US Marines serving in Japan and was a loving husband, father, grandfather "Opa."
Memorials may be made to Queen of All Saints Church, Lighthouse Museum or Youth Services Bureau of La Porte County.
